Dr Alan Crosby brought the Industrial Revolution times to life by his description of the
experiences of a typical family leaving their country home to seek better employment
and living standards in a new industrial town. This family left Dentdale at the beginning
of the 19th century, and, after a short stay at Dolphinholme, near Lancaster, finally
settled in Preston. Conditions there were less than idyllic, with a constant smoky
atmosphere, overcrowded, often insanitary living accomodation, where illness, often
quickly fatal, was rife and long, poorly-paid working hours. But for those who stuck it out
and survived, the rewards in terms of career and social enhancement was often great,
and a sense of stability often resulted. Overtones of today's culture were quoted by
Dr Crosby, for example, with teenage rebeliousness showing itself.

The Committee would like to wish all society "followers" a very merry Christmas and a very
happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year. Thank you very much for your support during
the past year.
