January 2007

Mrs Sheila Sturrock gave a fascinating account of the history of "pop-up-books"
to the January meeting. Moving figures accompanied books in the 1300's and
continued through the late medieval "chapbooks" and "harlequinades" to the
heyday of the books from the 19th to the early 20th centuries, when tableaux of story
scenes were included in the books. Mrs Sturrock illustrated her talk with slides from
national archives and duplicates of books in her own collection.
